Health Tip: Is Clutter Keeping You From Reaching Your Health Goals?

I am super excited to have my friend Jill Whaley (The Fifteen Minute Mom) helping me out this week with our health tip!! She has a gift for you at the end of this post, you won’t want to miss out on that!! Be sure to follow her blog as well for more tips!!

Here’s Jill!

You might be thinking, “Yeah right! My house clutter has NOTHING to do with my health.” I’m here to tell you there might be more to this idea than you ever dreamed! There was a time in my life when I felt totally overwhelmed by just about everything. My house was a mess, my car was a rolling Goodwill, my paperwork was a nightmare, my eating was out of whack, my sleep habits were wonky at best, and my exercise routine was non-existent. Then a friend introduced me to an amazing resource by Marie Kondo: The Life-changing Magic of Tidying Up. My friend showed me her neatly organized drawers and closets with EMPTY SHELVES! When I sat down in her living room to visit with her, I felt so calm and collected that it really was like magic!

Inspired and encouraged, I drove home, bought the book on Audible since there were 437 people in line for it at the library, and I began implementing the system right away.

Chaos reigned.

For a few days anyway. Then the magic began to happen in my house too. Everything had a home. I found what ideas in the book worked for me and developed several new systems that serve our family’s needs well. Over a year later, much of my house still stands as it did after that initial decluttering session!

Then… I started going to the gym. For real! Why? I had more time to prioritize things that were important in my life: healthy eating, sleeping, and exercise. Family time. Relationships.

Clutter is a sneaky beast that feels safe and comfortable but is silently robbing you of life and joy!

Now we do periodic decluttering sessions and set some guidelines for our home.

Number 1: if you bring something new home, something old goes.

Number 2: junk mail never makes it past the front door. It is deposited in the outdoor trash can before we come inside.

These type of simple-to-remember rules cut down on a significant amount of clutter so that when we do declutter, it’s done in a matter of minutes instead of hours. Keeping our home clutter free has given me the time and ability to focus on our health goals and has freed up time to spend exploring nature with my girls.

Suggestions for beginning the process:

1. Physical clutter and mental clutter are connected. Write down everything on your “to-do” list on a blank piece of paper. Do a brain dump!

2. Set a timer! You will do MORE in LESS time if you are focused and keeping track.

3. Clean out and organize according to category rather than by room. For instance, focus on just the spices in your kitchen at one time instead of unloading all the cupboards at once. This allows you to stop and start, accomplishing much in short periods of time!

4. Go into this with the mindset of letting go. Strive to let go of ANYTHING that does not serve an immediate purpose in your life or does not bring you joy.

I would love to walk with you step by step through your first month of decluttering. Here is a free copy of my Clear the Clutter ebook with 31 days of specific (mostly) 15 minute activities that will help you go through your home top to bottom. When you are ready to simplify your stuff and increase your free time, download it here: I hope you’ll take the Clear the Clutter Challenge and set the stage for a healthy life, home and mindset! Blessings,

Jill Whaley

Book Report: What to Say When You Talk To Yourself by Shad Helmstetter, Ph.D

You know that saying, “If you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.” It’s true, especially when you talk to yourself.

What?! You don’t talk to yourself?!

I bet you do, most of us do. The question is, what are we telling ourselves and does it make a difference in the overall scheme of things.

According to the Bible, Proverbs 23:7, “As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” And Luke 6:45, “For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.”

Proverbs 18:21 says, “The tongue has the power of life and death.” Are you speaking life into your life?

Even though I’m not 100% on board with everything Dr. Helmstetter says in his book, there are LOTS of good nuggets in here. I really like how he talks about why most “self help” books don’t work…because we aren’t consistent…there’s that word again. 🙂

He talks about how we are given programming (like a computer) from different sources as we grow up, some good, some bad, and offers suggestions on reprogramming our “systems” in order to be more effective, healthy, successful, etc. I know that this has been true in my life, how I was as a child, what I believed about certain things has definitely changed over the years. And not always for the better. Making the time to be consistent, especially in prayer, is helping me to change some of those negative misconceptions I had about myself and about God specifically.

Dr. Helmstetter is also very thorough in helping you create specific affirmations to overcome some of these challenges and replace the negative “tapes” with positive ones. Chapter 8 is about the 5 steps of Self – Management that help control whether we succeed or fail. John Maxwell talks about this in several of his books as well, self-leadership. Here is a link to my Book Report on John’s book, Good Leaders Ask Great Questions. I have several other books on my list to read this year that are on the subject of mindset and self talk, so be watching for those reports as well.

I’ve combined what I learned from this book along with what I took away from Lara Casey and Terri Savelle Foy‘s books and I believe I’ve put together something that will help me take that next step mentally to creating “success” as it pertains to me and my life. I’ve put together a few videos and posts here on the blog about my system, here is a link to the first in the series in case you missed them.

Enjoy!!

Book Report: Good Leaders Ask Great Questions by John C. Maxwell

“The one thing you can do to have the greatest impact on your leadership potential is to be intentional every day about becoming equipped to lead.” – John C. Maxwell

Are you a leader? Do you want to be?

Maybe a better question is, do you have people who look up to or follow you?

Guess what?!?! That means you ARE a leader!!! Congrats!!

The funny thing about leadership, usually others see it in us before we can see it in ourselves. I’m a GREAT follower! However, if the situation calls for it I’m able to step in and lead as needed, but I never really considered myself a leader.

One of the things I’m learning about myself through this awesome personal growth program called owning my own home based business, is that I can be a great leader…I just need to sharpen my tools. I’ve heard that network marketing is personal growth with a paycheck, and it’s so true! Who doesn’t want to get paid to learn, right?!?! My friend Charlotte says that God uses the draw of working toward promotions to bring us closer to Him and grow us into the people He always knew we could be. He knows us so well, doesn’t He?

John’s book here has been very helpful, he has so many out there to choose from! I loved how he touched on a ton of different leadership topics in the section on questions leaders ask of him. He also talks about asking yourself questions, that is really where we all need to start.

Isn’t it funny how all of these books I’ve posted about so far have required a bit of self reflection? Coincidence? I think not. Self reflection is something I didn’t really make time for previously. I’m finding so much value in it though! If we can’t lead ourselves to success, we can’t lead anyone else there either. It must begin with me.

What areas of self leadership are you working on? What do you find most challenging as a leader? Most rewarding? I’d love to know! Share in the comments below!

Book Report: Dream It, Pin It, Live It by Terri Savelle Foy

Sooo….I thought this book was all about how to create a vision board. You know, cut pictures out of magazines and put them on a poster board with some encouraging quotes like “DREAM BIG!!” Or “The only thing you have to fear is fear itself.” etc.

I was wrong. SO wrong.

This book DOES talk about creating a vision board, but it ALSO talks about discovering the vision God has for you.

Terri is an amazing story teller, she weaves quotes from the Bible along with famous entrepreneurs from a century ago with quotes from some of today’s business leaders and “All Stars.” There is so much heart in what she writes!

Some of the topics she covers in this book (besides the actual building of your vision board) are:

  • Finding clarity in your vision
  • A 30 day Goal Challenge to help cement your goals and vision
  • Mindset and how you talk to yourself
  • The law of attraction
  • What to do while you want for your dreams to come true
  • Ideas and inspiration and success stories from others

I think that along with Lara Casey’s book, Make it Happen, Terri’s book here has changed the future of my business and family life. I’ve never really had trouble dreaming…ask my third grade teacher Mrs. Delgado…haha!! What I HAVE struggled with was creating and implementing the ‘how’ to achieve those dreams, and then of course, carrying out those actions. #procrastinatorunderreform

God has a special plan and purpose for each of us and I for one don’t want to get to Heaven and have Him ask me why I buried my talent or didn’t use the gifts He gave me to accomplish His purpose in my life. I believe that He gave me a specific purpose to help people find hope for their health and finances.

I KNOW that having my goals and dreams, along with the action steps to get there, right in front of my face as I type right now (as well as in a notebook with more details in my purse, more on that later) is going to help me reach my goals. Never again will I face a new year and think, “MAN! I thought I’d be further along than I am now…I’m still in the same place as LAST year!”

Forward progress…even if it is imperfect progress. That’s the aim, right!?

Health Tip: Simple Health System Part 1 – Healthy Mindset

“Whether you think you can, or you think you can’t, you’re right.” – Henry Ford

“As a man thinks in his heart, so is he.” Proverbs 23:7 KJV

“Oh Be careful little mouth, what you say.” Children’s song, author unknown

What we think and what we say has far reaching consequences and rewards. So the FIRST step toward improved health must be taken on the inside. There is a reason we say that we are getting healthy from the inside out. It’s so true!! What we think and say about ourselves, our “issues”, our appearance, etc. is part of creating that reality. Please notice that I said “PART.”

So if we think (or say) that something won’t work for us, it probably won’t. If we think that this is how life will always be, where we are sick and tired, we will always be sick and tired. If we decide, then think and say things like, “This is going to work! I feel better already!” Guess what, you WILL feel better already!

It’s not magic, or woowoo stuff. It’s a spiritual reality. We are told to speak life into the people and situations around us, why not speak life into our health?

I know that one of the things I struggle most with is my mindset. This is an area where I have spent a lot of time learning and growing…and I’m still learning and growing. Some parts of the month are easier than others…if you catch my drift. haha! But for the most part I’m making forward progress.

How much easier would it be to make healthy choices if I’m telling myself how much I love healthy foods!? My conscious mind might not believe me at first, but my subconscious mind doesn’t know the difference and will eventually help me convince that skeptical conscious mind that I really DO love healthy foods!

You’re challenge for the week is to write out a list of your negative self-talk, the things you say to yourself often, especially in regards to your health. Do you say things like, “This is killing me” or “That gets on my nerves” or maybe “I hate exercise and salad”? That’s part one, making that list. There is no room for “stinkin thinkin” on the road to a healthy life, in any aspect, whether you’re looking for health in your physical body, in your spiritual life, in your relationships, etc.

Part two is to write a positive statement that counters that negative statement. For instance, “I enjoy exercise because I know that it is helping me make myself better, healthier and stronger. I’m better able to do what God has called me to do when I am full of energy, and exercise helps me reach those goals.”

I’d love to hear your positive statements, share them in the comments below so we can cheer you on!!

We’ll be talking about this mindset thing a lot here on the blog. I also cover the entire Simple Health System in my eBook which you can get for FREE by signing up in the sidebar on the right. Check back soon for Part 2!
