Book Report: Good Leaders Ask Great Questions by John C. Maxwell

“The one thing you can do to have the greatest impact on your leadership potential is to be intentional every day about becoming equipped to lead.” – John C. Maxwell

Are you a leader? Do you want to be?

Maybe a better question is, do you have people who look up to or follow you?

Guess what?!?! That means you ARE a leader!!! Congrats!!

The funny thing about leadership, usually others see it in us before we can see it in ourselves. I’m a GREAT follower! However, if the situation calls for it I’m able to step in and lead as needed, but I never really considered myself a leader.

One of the things I’m learning about myself through this awesome personal growth program called owning my own home based business, is that I can be a great leader…I just need to sharpen my tools. I’ve heard that network marketing is personal growth with a paycheck, and it’s so true! Who doesn’t want to get paid to learn, right?!?! My friend Charlotte says that God uses the draw of working toward promotions to bring us closer to Him and grow us into the people He always knew we could be. He knows us so well, doesn’t He?

John’s book here has been very helpful, he has so many out there to choose from! I loved how he touched on a ton of different leadership topics in the section on questions leaders ask of him. He also talks about asking yourself questions, that is really where we all need to start.

Isn’t it funny how all of these books I’ve posted about so far have required a bit of self reflection? Coincidence? I think not. Self reflection is something I didn’t really make time for previously. I’m finding so much value in it though! If we can’t lead ourselves to success, we can’t lead anyone else there either. It must begin with me.

What areas of self leadership are you working on? What do you find most challenging as a leader? Most rewarding? I’d love to know! Share in the comments below!

Book Report: Dream It, Pin It, Live It by Terri Savelle Foy

Sooo….I thought this book was all about how to create a vision board. You know, cut pictures out of magazines and put them on a poster board with some encouraging quotes like “DREAM BIG!!” Or “The only thing you have to fear is fear itself.” etc.

I was wrong. SO wrong.

This book DOES talk about creating a vision board, but it ALSO talks about discovering the vision God has for you.

Terri is an amazing story teller, she weaves quotes from the Bible along with famous entrepreneurs from a century ago with quotes from some of today’s business leaders and “All Stars.” There is so much heart in what she writes!

Some of the topics she covers in this book (besides the actual building of your vision board) are:

  • Finding clarity in your vision
  • A 30 day Goal Challenge to help cement your goals and vision
  • Mindset and how you talk to yourself
  • The law of attraction
  • What to do while you want for your dreams to come true
  • Ideas and inspiration and success stories from others

I think that along with Lara Casey’s book, Make it Happen, Terri’s book here has changed the future of my business and family life. I’ve never really had trouble dreaming…ask my third grade teacher Mrs. Delgado…haha!! What I HAVE struggled with was creating and implementing the ‘how’ to achieve those dreams, and then of course, carrying out those actions. #procrastinatorunderreform

God has a special plan and purpose for each of us and I for one don’t want to get to Heaven and have Him ask me why I buried my talent or didn’t use the gifts He gave me to accomplish His purpose in my life. I believe that He gave me a specific purpose to help people find hope for their health and finances.

I KNOW that having my goals and dreams, along with the action steps to get there, right in front of my face as I type right now (as well as in a notebook with more details in my purse, more on that later) is going to help me reach my goals. Never again will I face a new year and think, “MAN! I thought I’d be further along than I am now…I’m still in the same place as LAST year!”

Forward progress…even if it is imperfect progress. That’s the aim, right!?

Book Review: Make it Happen by Lara Casey

I’m a highlighter. Are you? I like to highlight bits and pieces of the books I read that impact me so that I can flip through and remember the lessons I learned…this book…is probably the most highlighted book I’ve read in a while. haha!!

On the back cover Lara says, “Make it Happen is the story of how I surrendered my fear, took the leap, and got a life. In my case, a perfectly imperfect, fulfilling life as a mama, a working woman, and a grateful wife. This is how I chose to make ‘it’  – a greater purpose than mine – happen, and how you can too.”

This book was impactful in so many ways for me. She sprinkles in reflection questions during the telling of her story to help you process through your own story, to help you discover what your priorities are or should be, to guide you through the self-reflection process that we all so desperately need…or is that just me?

“God’s purpose for us is the big-picture vision; goals are our action plans to carry out that vision, using all He has given us.” pg 136

And Lara, through this book, helps guide you through the process of discovering that vision/purpose, breaking down those goals into action steps and helps you to create a road map to reaching those goals and fulfilling that vision.

Part 4 of the book, the last 64 pages, walks you through a similar process to what Lara uses in her Power Sheets workbooks (which I also LOVE!!). It’s a good idea to plan some quiet, uninterrupted (as much as possible) time to process through the steps she lays out. As a mom of 4 littles under 10, a wife, a business woman, I NEED to make sure I’m using my time wisely and effectively (I use that word a lot…I like things that are efficient, haha!). I loved Lara’s book, found a ton of value in it and whole-hardheartedly recommend it to everyone I know, no matter their situation or circumstances.  It’s just THAT good!!

Another thing I loved about this process is that it helped me remember that what we’re aiming for in this life is progress, not perfection. Anyone else get stuck because we’re afraid to mess up so we don’t do anything? As my friend Brenda would say, “Action cures EVERYTHING!!” Get moving! It doesn’t have to be perfect, in fact, it can’t be. If it was perfect the first time we probably wouldn’t ever learn anything. Perfect is boring. haha!

Aim for imperfect progress, get moving and let’s reach those goals and achieve the vision God has given us!

Book Report – Epic Faith by Marty Meyers

“An epic is a long narrative poem or story that includes a hero. The hero of God’s story is Jesus, and he invites us into his narrative by faith. When we come to the cross of Christ, our story dramatically changes and becomes pregnant with epic potential. Our lives become a beautiful tale of transformation, renewal, goodness, life, and profound love. With Jesus as the central hero, our story will glorify God and reflect his character. The plot of a life fully surrendered to and focused on God reflects a passionate pursuit of his dreams for us.” pg 3

“God has planted dream seeds in your heart, and in the following pages you will find courage to trust the One who can nourish those dreams into life.” pg 3

One of my goals this year is to read one book a week, on average. I thought it might be fun to share what I’ve learned with you, so this is the first of many. Enjoy!!

Even though I grew up going to church and accepted Christ as my Savior many years ago, I’ve always struggled with fully trusting Him. I know it sounds crazy, especially since I’ve had a pretty calm and good life. Maybe it is BECAUSE of that reason that I struggle with faith. My faith has never really been tested.

Reading Marty’s book was eye opening for me. Through stories of YWAM mission trips to India, financial struggles, and forest fires Marty tells a story of faith being tested…and the faithfulness of God. I lost count of the tears that fell, the goosebumps that rose and the moments of awe at watching God work in their lives and ministry as I read their story.

This book showed me that testing will come (as much as I don’t want it to) AND that God will be faithful through it all. It also showed me that the blessings on the other side will be so worth the testing! God has given us each a purpose, one that only we can fulfill. He has also promised to provide what we need to accomplish His purpose for us…even though it may look differently than what WE have imagined. Growth cannot happen in comfort zones, and without growth we die, physically and spiritually. Full reliance upon Him is what we need to do, it is a place where we are rooted and spend all of our time. Fully centered on His presence…something that I think we can all improve on. I know I can!

Remember it’s not the size of our faith that matters (or our belief in ourselves or our abilities) it’s the size of our God that matters.
